Can Artificial Christmas Trees be Recycled?

artificial tree As simple as it sounds when asking can all artificial Christmas trees be recycled, one of the main things to be considered is if the technology exists to convert the material used to make the tree into a raw material that can be used again. Unfortunately, at present, recycling plants cannot recycle most artificial Christmas trees.

Artificial Christmas trees are made from several materials, including polyvinyl chloride and PVC, which presently recycling plants cannot process. For this reason, recycling plants cannot recycle a fully assembled tree. However, if your municipality accepts all rigid plastics, you can likely recycle part of your artificial Christmas tree. Some cities can recycle the base and trunk of the tree, provided the branches are removed first. However, for safety-related reasons, we do not recommend that you take your tree apart by yourself. If this is something you would like to do to avoid injury, we strongly advise using a professional with adequate protective gear and proper equipment.

Although recycling plants cannot recycle an artificial or fake Christmas tree, there are ways to reduce the environmental impact of your tree. Our general rule of thumb is to keep your tree for as long as possible. While artificial Christmas trees are not biodegradable, a 2018 study revealed that artificial Christmas trees could be a greener choice if re-used for five years or more. For these reasons, we always recommend buying a quality artificial Christmas tree as supposed to a cheap alternative. We ensure all our artificial Christmas trees are built to last. If you would like to purchase a new tree style or would like to get rid of your tree sooner, we recommend donating your tree to your local Charity shop for re-sale and re-use.

To maximize the life of your tree, you must store your tree correctly. It is essential to keep your tree in a cool, dry place. Whether you opt to store your tree in its original box or a tree bag, we strongly advise storing it with a damp trap de-humidifier box or container of baking soda. A moisture absorption solution prevents any musty odor from developing and ensures your tree remains fresh and dry year after year.
